Estimados,

The Honorable Ambassador Samantha Power
Permanent Representative to the United Nations
Dear Madam Ambassador:
We, the undersigned Cuban, Cuban-American citizens, and friends of democracy, call on you to publicly oppose the candidacy of Cuba for seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council elections to be held on November 12, 2013.
According to the General Assembly Resolution 60/261, candidates for the UN Human Rights Council are supposed to be countries that “uphold the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights” and Cuba fails to meet these standards.
The citizens of Cuba are subject to arbitrary arrest, detention and exile; are denied the right to freedom of assembly and association; are subjected to torture and degrading treatment and punishment; are subjected to arbitrary interference with their privacy, family, home, correspondence and attacks upon their honor and reputation; do not have the right to freedom of movement and residence; do not enjoy liberty, security of person, freedom of speech, nor freedom from fear, and thousands have been arbitrarily deprived of their properties and their nationality.
According to Article 28 “everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration can be fully realized.” We urge you to introduce a Resolution at the United Nations to hold Cuba accountable and not be allowed to influence over vital decisions on human rights.
The People of Cuba depend on the voices of free individuals to condemn Cuba’s regime gross and systematic human rights violations. Please do not be silent.
